Yes, I remember those wooden barrels now that you mention it. A lumber yard
near me sells them, along with about fifty other little wooden figures and
cubes and stuff. 
 
I have a Senet game (ancient Egyption, possible a Backgammon ancestor) that
uses wooden spindles, but I don't think I've seen spindles at the lumber
yard. Maybe I'll go take another look.

Wooden Barrels are available as a craft supply.  I think the Oil
Drum variety matches the size of standard coins.
