# 9 Comments. # Are there mistakes in the sample game contained in the ruleset? For example I don't understand the transition from move 9) to 10) at all.

RonHaleEvans, would it be better to update the link for the rules to use the Wayback Machine or to upload a copy of the rules (which in this case seems to have a custom license which would allow us to distribute it)? At this point I'm not terribly optimistic about the return of piecepack.org...

TrevorLDavis, a few months ago, during one of the periods when Piecepack.org was still up, I downloaded all of the game PDFs they hosted. I've been planning to upload them to their own directory on Ludism.org. More than one person has asked for them recently, so I'll do that soon. Then we'll have to fix the links on the wiki, but that should be trivial.

FYI, this is RonHaleEvans, writing from a new laptop (last message too). I had forgotten what a nuisance the QuestionAsker plugin is. With our current antispam measures, we don't really need it. I'll remove it soon.

RonHaleEvans, were you planning on uploading the Games that had ambiguous de jure permission for 3rd parties to distribute? I guess the de facto risk of getting sued is pretty low but just doing a Wayback Machine link for them eliminates any risk while still giving access. PlansOfAction itself contained text explicitly permitting 3rd party distribution.

p.s. I suspect there are several of us with local backups of all those rules...

Oh, right. I had forgotten this conversation.

It seems like the best thing to do is to just turn the piecepack.org links into Wayback Machine links for now. We can always upload the PDFs to ludism.org later. In that case, if someone complains, we can remove their PDF and go back to linking to the Wayback Machine.

In my view, "ambiguous de jure" = unambiguous de facto. But from an abundance of caution, let's do things this way.

I'll make the Wayback links soon, unless someone else does it first. Trevor, I believe that as an admin, you can use a regex search/replace to fix the links, but I haven't looked into this lately.

I haven't looked into it either. I did just lookup Wayback link generation and I think prepending the http://piecepack.org with something like https://web.archive.org/web/2016/ should generally work for finding the closest Wayback capture of the rules document to 2016-07-01 (I'm assuming there weren't any relevant rule updates on piecepack.org after 2016-01-01 and we should try to avoid potential 404 pages from 2020?).

Right. That's a more detailed version of what I was thinking. (I hadn't decided what a good year would be, among other things, but 2016 sounds good, for the reasons you cited.) It did occur to me that one might not want to globally prefix piecepack.org, but that was when the site was still live. At the moment, it hardly matters. I guess I'd be sure it's always http and not https, or vice versa, or both. If you're going to do this, please make a backup of the site, because as I recall, s/r operations are irreversible. Thanks.

All the http://www.piecepack.org links have all been replaced by the suggested global s/r (there were no found https links). The resulting links aren't great (on Firefox to download the file you must click on the link, then click the "x" to remove the Wayback machine header-thing on top, then download and can't simply go straight to download) but definitely better than seeing a 404 page.

That's terrific. Thank you, Trevor. Now people can download those old games again.

By the way, there is a way to form a Wayback URL so that the header graphic does not appear. I have the instructions somewhere in my notes, but I believe I was just copy/pasting them from an Internet Archive page.
