The two revisions are the same.

One or more virtual subjects of the game world which the player controls, usually directly. The primary representative of the player in game, sometimes itself represented by a physical object, as in pieces of a board game.

Does this apply to chess? Would you say that all the white pieces of a chess game are the avatar for the person playing white, or would you say that each white piece is an avatar for the person playing white?
