Dice and tile backs

Is there any particular order that the numbers are usually arranged on
the dice? Regular ones have opposite sides add to seven. I figured
that with null through five, the opposite sides could add to five.
How often are the tiles made with checkered backs? Is a checkered
pattern useful for any games?
