Shogi (aka Japanese Chess or the Game of Generals) is a popular chess variant notable for its "drop rule" that allows captured pieces to be returned back onto the board by the capturing players and an intricate promotion scheme for its pieces.
There are many Shogi rule sets some of which meet the definition of free culture. A link is provided to a rule set under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. Since the game has been played for hundreds of years public domain rule sets likely exist.
