Seattle Cosmic Game Night, Saturday, 10 September 2005

TITLE

Seattle Cosmic was held in the University District of Seattle in the home of Dave Howell and Eric Yarnell, ND.

Who came? David Adams, John Braley, Kisa Griffin, Marty Hale-Evans, Ron Hale-Evans, Dave Howell, Kathy Kizer, Tim Schutz and Eric Yarnell, ND.

This is the first time in months that the game night wiki has been done so I am out of the practice of tracking things like time and scores. Also, there weren't any prizes so I guess it's time to drag out the prize bag again if people are still into that. For my entries you will only find the players and the winners plus some notes that may give you an idea where other players were at in the end.

What happened during this game?

This Saturday I finally gave Settles of Catan another try. Dave Howell talked me into trying it with a dice deck and a board that is random but then adjusted. There was much discussion of rules that no one had fully explained when I played previously and that helped a lot. It was much more fun than my previous attempts (mostly due to the company) However, I still think the person that chooses the location of their settlements 4th and 5th is doomed as Eric had this honor and was crushed to the point that he was begging for the mercy of a swift end to the game. Marty said she has no love of the basic game but loves it with Cities and Knights. She also claimed that there are many more ways to work to victory from a poor starting position. It may not be this week, but some time soon I will give that a try, preferably with a regular dice deck rather than a doubled one.

What happened during this game?

This was a lot of fun even when I was groaning over the saddest of hands. For example, one time I thought I neeeded 2 move 2s and a right turn to finally thouch the second flag and I got the moves I need but 3 left turns. The saddest part was that Dave A. asked why I hadn't used the backup in register three as it would have put me right on the flag...doh! The only thing I really don't like about this version is the lack of virtual bots. This was the second time I played this new AH RR with Dave and he gave me a second whooppin'. I used to consider myself good at this and now I plan to attend a class. ;-) As such I would like to propose a Robo Rally league. Dave A. has, I think, at least help organize a Formula De league so maybe he would help organize this. It isn't that I think we should play every night. Rather than that I am thinking it would just be fun to track which tracks we play, how many players were in the race, where we placed, the number of lives and damage we had at the end and which options we had if any. For those that don't know, the new RR has a lot of preset races with varying difficulty and lengths.

Perhaps the other players can comment on their positions at the end. I was still dancing around the second of four flags. And Dave, is that the right track name?

What happened during this game?

This was the first time any of us had played and I was teaching. It went pretty well and I found it fun. I would like to play it again with the correct rules. As typically happens first time we played something wrong. Only two things came up when re-reading the rules.

1) If two players want to claim a planet at the same time the tie goes to the player who can meet the cost with the fewest cards.

2) After taxation, the player taking the taxes may lay down cards. I had fun and would like to play it some more.

I decided to go after every planet that came up and try make my sets quickly at the end. John and David grabbed bery few planets but in the end I only won by the tiniest of margins. In fact had I not John not discarded in exactly the order he did Dave would have won and had I not gone before John he would have won. Whew! Actually, John probably would have tasted victory much earlier if he could have got a planet and the same is true of Dave if he hadn't lost one of his sets to an action card. At least that is how I remember it now.

What happened during this game?

It was getting late and all I really wanted in a game was a pretty board to look at. Elfenland was nixed by Dave A. and Expedtion was being discussed when Dave H. brought out his home made board which is beautiful and added a lot to the atmosphere as did the Muppets chess set pieces we Dave H. brought out for pawns. Lots of pretty things to look at and it was just the right complexity level for my tired mind. I was Animal, Dave H. was Kermit, John was The Swedish Chef, Dave A. was Gonzo and Dr. Lucky was played by Statler (thanks for reminder Dave H.).

Dave H. did a great job of teaching/reminding us how to play. Dave A. played very well and was looking like the victor but he got greedy. We had pretty much burned though all of the failure cards (at least I had) when Kermit tried to kill statler with a single finger to the eye. Gonzo let it go past him while sitting on a huge stack of spite (about 15 points). He was expecting that The Swedish Chef would use the only other spite point that was available at that time to stop Kermit but it didn't happen. Animal had no way to intervene so Kermit was the successful assassin.
