How about temporary stickers? I've seen 0.5 inch round dot stickers in
several colors at office stores that, if lightly applied, should be
easy to remove. Or perhaps colored star stickers like some teachers
use? Or how about Post-It style sticky notes in different colors?

I would strongly recommend against using dry erase markers on any
porous surface (such as wooden piecepack bits) unless you want the
markings to be permanent. In fact, dry erase markers are one of the
best ways to permanently color wooden bits.
